I think the professor is trying to pound a square peg in to a round hole. I kind of like ESA it enhances diversity and preserves critical habitat. It was never intended as animal rights legislation but has improved the lot of many nonetheless. Like most things government it could be improved, but just last week I saw a pair of bald eagles cruising the foothills and last month a golden chasing a field mouse at Santa Susana. It's been pretty good for raptors:)

I think I get what he's saying, maybe - the ESA doesn't really exist for the sake of animals, it exists for our sake, so we can preserve a habitat we like, not because we care about the lives and sufferings and deaths of individual animals.

I've been wondering something similar ... does God see us as Forms of human beings and not as individuals? People live and die and are forgotten, and maybe all that matters to God is not the fate of every individual person, but only that there are always beings existing, like not worrying about what happens to a particular blade of grass, as long as you still always have a lawn. Depressing thought but it comes to mind for me as individual people suffer and die and disappear :(

I think she's just mistaken about the capacity of a government, enlightened or otherwise, to care things in that way. It comes back to us, you and me,we are supposed to care about the animals and each other and help others to do the same if we can. On the other hand God's love for you and each of us is deep radical and personal. She's just kind of quiet about it most of the time:)

Yeah, I do think the ESA is a good thing, but it can't do all she wants it to do. But I think the government can and does do some of what she wants with anti-cruelty laws, like that recent one in CA about the cages of farm animals.

I want to believe that about God.
