Veterans Day

The only veteran I've ever really known personally is my grandfather. He was a colonel in the army, in for 20 years, and served in both WWI and II. He never really talked about it and was not at all military-ish.

Here he is with me and my (baby) sister ...

Here he is with my grandmother ...

And here's a pic of him when he was young. He's on the far left, with his father and brothers ...

He was my main father figure since I never really got to know my father. I learned so much from him, including how to be a Democrat, but also about pickle sandwiches and polka music :) Love you and miss you, grandpa.

Today I would have called my grandfather to reminisce about his time in the Canadian navy during WWII. I miss him - he's been gone for 2 years now.

Pickles and Polka music are awesome! It's good to have sweet memories :)

Hi Dyan :) Are you Canadian? The navy seems like an interesting choice, probably because I've been watching The Last Ship which has a lot of navy stuff. My grandfather died when I was in college, so he's been gone a long time.

Yep - Canadian :)

My paternal grandpa told me a few years ago that he was underage when he joined the navy (only 17) and that he did it for adventure - had no idea what he was getting into! My maternal grandpa was also in the Canadian navy. He worked in the communications room on board ship, sending/receiving Morse code. My mom once told me that (other than the captain) he would have to be the last to leave the ship if it was sinking! Glad he survived and lived until I was in my 20's (a long time ago for me too). Such a blessing to know all of my grandparents!

Oh, for some reason I thought you were in the US midwest. I've just been once to Canada, on a family vacation when I was a teen. We visited Niagara Falls :)

It's interesting that I gave that impression :) I do love midwest history, especially Laura Ingalls, and have traveled the area with my family. I'm from the Fraser Valley in British Columbia (currently living in Chilliwack). I've never been to Niagra Falls but my husband and I are hoping to take our kids on a cross Canada trip one summer - so much to see and learn about! It's funny when we connect with someone online - I feel like I know so much about you but I forget that I haven't told you much about me!

It is interesting to meet people online. I've gotten to know people from Israel, England, Romania, a few from Canada, but most are from the US. The sitemeter place tells me that people visit the blog from all over ... Europe, Asia, Africa, South America .... but not many have commented.
